The Nikon D40 will use all the Nikon AF lenses made from 1992, so you will have a wonderful choice of new and used lenses. Minolta AF lenses and Sony Alpha lenses both share the Minolta AF mount. Definitely not the Canon since it is incompatible with the Nikon lens mount. Nikon cameras use Nikon lenses.

Canon cameras use canon lenses. Pentax cameras use Pentax lenses. Sony cameras use Sony and Minolta Maxxum AF lenses.
